The Roman Army

Though not the seasoned forces of Belisarius or Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the army of the Exarch of Sicily is still a truly awesome force at its full strength. Though weak leadership and strife in the east has stripped the Romans of their homeland in Latium and the Holy City of Rome herself, they may yet march through its streets once more in Triumph as though the days of Caesar himself were restored!

This army is heavily consisted of heavy units, particularly the heavy infantry (Skutatoi). However, in true Eastern Roman fashion, the Tagmata/Cataphractoi heavy cavalry provide the elan of the Exarch, and thus the Emperor himself by being foremost in status relative to the lowly foot soldier. They are the heavy maneuvering force, tasked with sweeping enemy cavalry off the field and then crashing into the enemy rear.

The infantry are not to be underestimated however, as good, solid, and (especially) loyal infantrymen are always in demand for an empire in slow decline. The skutatoi swordsmen are to form a shield wall in combat, keeping the enemy locked in a brutal melee, while the spearmen guard the flanks from envelopment and cavalry charges.

Meanwhile, the armoured archers are to provide support by firing over the heads of their comrades and wittling down approaching enemies. These men are best used out of the melee and on a hillside or cliff edge overlooking the battle.

The least of these, the skirmishers are to harass the enemy and either bait them to charge or distract them from Roman maneuvers all while aiming to reduce their numbers before the general engagement.

When the enemy has begun to route, the light cavalry will run them down ensuring as few as possible opponents return to tell the tale of Roman might!
