Crossbowmen

Soldiers armed with long-range crossbows powerful enough to pierce enemy armour and defences.

It takes years of training and immense upper strength to be able to draw back the bowstring to the nocking point. Firing a crossbow needs the user to be taught only how to load a bolt and point it.

Unlike notching an arrow, however, a crossbow bolt can be loaded easily and held until the user is ready to fire.

Despite its ease of use, the draw-weight increases the bolt's speed and power when released, meaning that less-skilled troops can be armed but still prove deadly on the battlefield.

Unit Abilities

  • Smoke Screen
    Thick plumes of smoke obscure line of sight, making units seem temporarily invisible.
  • Miasma
    The dense and tough undergrowth that plagues the jungles of the South is a hindrance to all those who try to penetrate into the heartlands of the Nanman.
  • Loose
    The unit spreads apart, making it more difficult for arrows to hit them.

    Can hide in forests.

Strengths & Weaknesses

  • Role: rear line
    These troops are best placed at the rear of an army, where they can cause damage from a position of relative safety.
  • Good against armour
    This unit's missiles are heavily tipped to drill through the strongest armour, but will still be deflected by shields.
  • Poor in melee
    This unit is poor when fighting hand-to-hand. Try to keep it away from enemy formations.
