投石兵在古代军队中较为常见。投石器甚至可以追溯到旧石器时代,和弓箭相比,投石器更容易制作,射程也更远一些。

投石器由亚麻类植物纤维制成,有一个放置石头的支架。投石器一端是指环,另一端有多节的把手。投石兵用中指拉住指环,手握把手,将悬带缠紧,然后通过手腕用力将石头抛出。投石器发射和装填都十分迅速,因此承受打击的敌人对它绝无好感。

发射的石头不尽相同,有从河中捡的,有的是用粘土和铅块制成。铅弹甚至能够打到超过400米远的地方。这些投掷物上有时也会刻上文字,如“接着!”或“尝尝这个”。抛掷物速度很快,尽管缺乏弓箭的穿透力,但在近距离仍能击碎骨骼或甲胄。较为出名的是,罗马执政官保卢斯就是在灾难性的坎尼会战中被投石兵砸死的。
