Their weapons include a sword, a longer spear, and a light pelte shield instead of the heavy hoplon, so they can handle their spears with the left hand as well, which allows these units to wield sarissas.

They are an elite royal unit, appointed to the personal guard of the king, chosen from veterans, and always posted on the weakest part of the phalanx. They are equipped like heavy hoplites, but some of them wear only their tunic with their heavy equipment.

They are useful against light infantry, but their lack of shields means they are vulnerable to enemy arrows.
