Eastern Spearmen

Der Einsatz des Thureos, eines großen, ovalen Schildes, verbreitete sich etwa ab dem 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. in der gesamten hellenischen Welt. Der hölzerne, mit Tierhaut bespannte Thureos unterschied sich darin vom früheren griechischen Hoplon, das einen mittigen Handgriff besaß, geschützt durch einen vertikalen Längsrücken. Dieser wiederum konnte mit einem breiten Metallstreifen versehen werden, der den Griff und die Hand des Trägers schützte. Inspiration für den Thureos lieferten die rechteckigen und ovalen Schilde der Kelten, möglicherweise durch den Kontakt mit den wandernden Galatern, und er wurde zunächst von den Illyrern und Thrakern genutzt, ehe ihn die Griechen übernahmen. Trotz seiner Größe war der Thureos im Vergleich zu dem traditionellen Hoplon leicht und wurde schon bald von schwer gepanzerten Peltasten übernommen. Die nach dem Schild benannten Thureophoroi konnten als Peltasten kämpfen und mit Wurfspeeren scharmützeln, jedoch auch mit größeren Schilden und längeren Speeren eine Formation ähnlich einer Phalanx bilden. Der vielseitige Thureos wurde von vielen Kulturen verwendet und abgewandelt, darunter auch die Auxiliare und Kavallerie der späteren römischen Legionen.
