Thracian Warriors

Die Thraker bestanden aus etwa 40 Stämmen, die eine gemeinsame Sprache und Kultur teilten. Sie bewohnten das riesige Gebiet nördlich der griechischen Staaten. Sie waren ein aufständischer, kriegsliebender und rebellischer Feind, aber auch gute Verbündete im Kampf. Viele Griechen fürchteten sich vor dem Tag, an dem sie unter einem Herrscher vereint nach Süden stürmen würden.

Dazu kam es zwar nie, doch fanden sich in vielen Teilen der griechischen und persischen Welt Thraker als Söldner, oft als spezialisierte Plänkler oder leichte Truppen. In der Schlacht von Raphia 217 v. Chr. waren Thraker auf beiden Seiten vertreten. Die Romphaia bestand aus einem langen Stiel mit einer nach vorne gebogenen, messerscharfen Klinge, die in den Händen der geübten Thraker ohne Weiteres Gliedmaßen abtrennen konnte.

Der berühmteste thrakische „General“, der tatsächlich niemals in Thrakien oder an der Spitze einer thrakischen Armee kämpfte, war Spartacus, Anführer der größten Sklavenrevolte gegen die Römer 73 - 71 v. Chr.
