Intimidation of the Opposition
When eloquence fails, fear always works.Even if the barbarian chieftain showed bravery in battle and behaved honourably at all times, certain people would always question his authority. Still, they would obey him, as disloyalty meant banishment or even death. The chieftain had to tread carefully around such elements and weigh up the options at hand. In many cases, a show of force would suffice in disheartening potential mutineers. A riskier approach was to coerce the rebellious souls into openly challenging the chieftain and then defeat them in combat. The final option involved underhand methods, such as bribery or even assassination, yet either of these could bring dishonour and shame upon the chieftain himself if discovered.
