Enforced Conscription

"Glory! Riches! All of that awaits in the army. Your measly life is a small price to pay!"

The Roman army in the 3rd century AD was gradually depleted by a combination of external attacks, internal strife, economic hardships and even plague. Volunteers from amongst the Roman populace were relatively scarce, as fewer and fewer people were willing to risk injury or death in exchange for a lowly soldier's wage. Recruits from barbarian tribes, on the other hand, were easy to find and were eager to serve Rome and get paid in the process. As military promotions came as a direct result of a person's merit, in time, many high-ranking Roman officers were of barbarian descent.
