Sidonian Rites

Carthaginian society had a rigid structure of citizens and 'small ones', the non-citizens who had no political rights but were still expected to pay taxes to the ruling elite. Non-citizens and even foreigners could be given the advantages of a citizen if they were granted the honour of Sidonian Rights. These were given to those who had distinguished themselves in service to Carthage, be it through a good trade agreement or feats of bravery on the battlefield.
