“无论身处何地，我都不会让我神圣的武器蒙羞，抑或抛弃我的同伴…”所有希腊人在进入大学成为公民的时候都要进行成年礼宣誓，宣誓的内容正是以这句话开头。在希腊文化中，战场上的荣誉非常重要，因为神在注视着你，不管胜利与否，只有勇于战斗的人可以进入神的视界。过分狂妄傲慢在很多城邦中是犯罪行为，因此，过度吹嘘自己在战场上的表现是得不偿失的！

步兵团是所有希腊式军队的核心，健身属于基本军事训练的内容。宣誓效忠国家的军人，必须做好随时战斗的准备。在军队服役是一份荣誉，赞美军队的希腊文化对此感到骄傲：“在我死去的时候，我不会离开我的城市哪怕一点点的距离；但在我出生的时候，就已经有了为我的城市去到任何一个远方的觉悟！”
