在古代,战俘通常会被卖为奴隶。那些被蛮族俘虏的人也同样不幸。很多凯尔特语中有关奴隶的单词都同根于拉丁语单词“captus”,或“俘虏”,这也许是使用奴隶这一风俗是从罗马或希腊传入的证据之一。这些文明对奴隶有着不同的见解。在希腊,一个奴隶从被奴役或是在战争中被俘虏之日起,就再也无法成为希腊的市民。而罗马人会在奴隶被解放后给予他们完全的自由,甚至能够有机会参与竞选公职
