每个军团随行携带着挖掘工具，但工程部队拥有专门的工程技能。军事工程的精彩例子有前55年恺撒渡过莱茵河时架的桥梁，以及73年马察达围城中建立的高墙和攻城梯。这些部队也明显地参与一些民用项目，比如营造建筑、制砖、建造港口等等
