船只的建造、维护，以及拥有安全的港口，对任何地中海沿岸民族的贸易和扩张都极为重要。从公元前500年开始，希腊三桡战船就已成为整个希腊化世界的中坚力量。三桡战船最长可达四十米，由一百七十位训练有素的专业划桨手操纵，稳定性可能欠佳但胜在窄小和轻便。划桨手被要求在端坐时投掷标枪和石块，以使船只免于摇摆。雅典的比雷埃夫斯港有近五百个船泊位，停航时可容纳最多七百五十条战船。迦太基人建设人工港保护他们的船只。据信，这些人工港可被排空，从而变成干船坞，用以船舶的维护
