Savaşların, planlı karşılaşmalardan ziyade bireysel onur kavgaları şeklinde cereyan ettiği kahramanlar çağından sonra, ordular disiplinli birliklere ayrıldı. Şehir devleti çatışmalarının ve dış tehditlerin yükselişte olduğu dönemde, MÖ 700 civarında, Yunanlar ilk hoplit birliklerini oluşturdular. Bunlar, kendi silah ve zırhlarını sağlayan, özgür yurttaşlardı. Teçhizatlarında bir standart yoktu ve bu askerler, nesiller boyu aktarılmış aile armalarını, kalkan ve zırhlarında taşıyorlardı. Fakat hoplit adı, bu askerlerin ortak olan tek teçhizatından geliyordu: Hoplon kalkanı. Bu dairesel kalkan sadece onu taşıyanı değil, aynı zamanda solundaki kişiyi de korumak için elverişliydi. Meşhur falanks düzeninde, bir kitle hâlinde ilerleyen hoplitler, düşman üzerine sağlam bir duvar gibi yürümekteydi.
