Müsabakalar, kazancın yeşerdiği topraklardır.Antik dünyada, şehirlerin dışında yaşayan insanların çoğu tarımla uğraşıp sade hayatlar yaşıyordu. Yetiştirilen önemli ekinlerin arasında buğday ve arpa gibi tahıl ürünleriyle elma, erik, şeftali, kiraz gibi meyveler vardı ve yetiştirilebilen her yerde zeytin de yetiştiriliyordu. Çoğu çiftliğin sahipleri oradaki ailelerdi ama şehirler büyüdükçe verimli topraklara olan talep de arttı.
Fiyatların giderek artmasına rağmen, küçük çiftçinin tutunması zorlaştı. Zengin Romalılar üretimi arttırmak için geniş araziler satın alıp latifundia adındaki devasa mülkler açtılar. Bu çiftliklere köleler de getirildi ve su ufak haznelerden getirilip sulama hendeklerinden veriliyordu. Yazar Plinius nihayetinde büyük ölçekli sanayi çiftçiliğinin İtalya ve vilayetlerine zarar verdiğinden şikayet etti.
