В восточных странах, особенно в Парфии, большой популярностью пользовалась чешуйчатая броня катафрактариев, которая защищала и всадника, и коня. По образцу парфянских катафрактариев Антиох III создал в армии Селевкидов два отряда элитной конницы гетайров ("соратников") по тысяче всадников в каждом. У парфян и войск Александра Македонского полководцы переняли тактику, при которой тяжелая конница сминала вражеских всадников, а затем прорывалась на фланг пехоты. Особенно страшным был удар кавалерийского клина, который распарывал строй.
