Królewskie koszary
Ćwiczenia i zakwaterowanie elitarnych wojsk wymagają odpowiednich warunków.Po epoce bohaterów, kiedy to wynik walki zależał od odwagi pojedynczych osób, a bitwy przypominały raczej bójki niż prawdziwe starcia, armie zaczęto organizować w zdyscyplinowane jednostki. Z powodu wzrostu liczby konfliktów między państwami-miastami i liczby zagrożeń ze strony świata zewnętrznego, Grecy około 700 r. p.n.e. stworzyli pierwsze oddziały hoplitów. Należeli do nich wolni obywatele, którzy musieli zadbać o własne zbroje i broń. Nie istniał żaden standard wyposażenia – żołnierze nosili tarcze i pancerze ozdobione rodzinnymi symbolami, które przekazywano z pokolenia na pokolenie. Jednak nazwa „hoplita” pochodzi od jednego elementu, którego używali wszyscy ci wojownicy – hoplonu. Ta okrągła tarcza trzymana była tak, by chronić nie tylko jej właściciela, ale i towarzysza z lewej. Hoplici poruszali się w szyku falangi, ruszając na wroga niczym ruchoma ściana tarcz.
