Campo di adunata
I cittadini, i sudditi, le reclute e le leve devono raccogliersi qui per l’addestramento e la guerra.Facendo ricorso ai cittadini o ai sudditi, oltre ai mercenari, gli stati ellenici erano in grado di radunare velocemente molte truppe, al tempo della guerra. I loro generali erano di solito funzionari eletti o scelti tra la nobiltà. Ad Atene, le forze dell’esercito erano costituite dagli efebi, che seguivano l’addestramento, e dai cittadini maschi più anziani, guidati da dieci “strategoi”, i ministri della guerra.
In origine, si trattava di opliti ma, in seguito all’esempio di Alessandro Magno, si svilupparono in ipaspisti, falangiti e tureofori, nei secoli successivi. Questo cambiamento determinò anche un impiego di truppe mercenarie più professioniste. I cittadini più benestanti, in grado di permettersi di avere dei cavalli, li offrivano agli hippeis, i membri della cavalleria leggera, mentre la cavalleria nobile seguiva il modello di Alessandro. I mercenari, come i Traci, la polizia di arcieri sciti di Atene o la guardia reale di Galati di Cleopatra integravano queste forze raccolte.
