Les troupes sujettes et citoyennes, les conscrits et les enrôlés se retrouvent ici pour s'entraîner et s'engager.

Puisant dans leurs citoyens ou sujets, complétés par des mercenaires, les États helléniques pouvaient rapidement former des troupes en temps de guerre. Les généraux étaient d'ordinaires des élus officiels ou choisis parmi la noblesse. À Athènes, les militaires étaient composés d'éphèbes en entraînement et de citoyens plus âgés, menés par les dix stratèges élus ou ministres de la guerre.

D'ordinaire, ces hommes étaient des hoplites mais, selon le modèle élaboré par Alexandre le Grand, ils évoluèrent en hypaspistes, phalangites et thurephoroi lors des siècles suivants. Ce changement eut aussi pour conséquence une utilisation de troupes plus professionnelles et de mercenaires. Les citoyens les plus riches, pouvant se permettre de posséder des chevaux, formaient les hippeis ou cavalerie légère, tandis que la cavalerie de nobles suivait encore le modèle d'Alexandre. Les mercenaires, comme les Thraces, la police d'archers scythes d'Athènes ou la garde royale de Cléopâtre venaient compléter ces forces incorporées.

Due to a lack of proper training and cavalry traditions, these horsemen generally perform poorly.
