Les villages ne se développent que là où il y a quelque chose à exploiter et les mieux placés deviennent rapidement des villes.
Dans le monde grec, de telles colonies pouvaient varier des simples hameaux des périèques spartes, qui aidaient à garder les esclaves hilotes à l'intérieur de l'État et servaient d'intermédiaires avec le monde extérieur, aux « mille cités d'or » de Bactriane qui prospéraient grâce à l'agriculture et au commerce florissant en Asie mineure.
