Les villages prospères attirent le commerce et les habitants et leur croissance en est le résultat.Basées sur l'agriculture, la pêche, le commerce ou les mines, les petites communautés soutenaient la croissance des cités-États grecques et plus tard des empires helléniques en les approvisionnant en matières premières. Les villages ne se développent que là où il y a quelque chose à exploiter et les mieux placés deviennent rapidement des villes.
Dans le monde grec, de telles colonies pouvaient varier des simples hameaux des périèques spartes, qui aidaient à garder les esclaves hilotes à l'intérieur de l'État et servaient d'intermédiaires avec le monde extérieur, aux « mille cités d'or » de Bactriane qui prospéraient grâce à l'agriculture et au commerce florissant en Asie mineure.
