A pesar de las limitaciones musicales del cuerno, pocos instrumentos tuvieron tal importancia en el mundo antiguo. Debido a su tono llamativo, los cuernos tenían una función vital para señalizar durante las batallas, cazas, asambleas o rituales y conferían cierto nivel de prestigio en estas situaciones.

Aunque los primeros cuernos eran simples caracolas o cuernos de animales huecos, la importancia social de este instrumento hizo que se volviera cada vez más ostentoso en su diseño. Un excelente ejemplo de esto es el carnyx, un enorme instrumento de metal con la cabeza de un animal rugiendo. Estaba diseñado para que se pudiese oír durante el fragor de la batalla y destacaba mucho en las representaciones romanas de los bárbaros.
