Hellenic Barracks

The training and quartering of elite troops requires the proper surroundings.

The Hellenisation of the Nabataeans occurred relatively late in comparison to the regions surrounding them, not appearing in Nabataean inscriptions until the 1st century BC. At this time, during the reign of Aretas III, the Nabataeans began to embrace Hellenistic influence and ideas wholeheartedly. They began to produce silver coins in the Hellenistic style and even started to write in Greek. Aretas also brought Greek and Roman-style architecture to Petra, the Nabataean capital, along with his other new settlements. Greek influences also found their way into the Nabataean military, with some units adopting their hoplite armaments and phalanx tactics as a result.
