In the Etruscan language, ‘pera’ translates literally as ‘house’ or ‘property’. The Etruscan pera was notable for its complex drainage systems, proving that the Etruscans had great knowledge of hydrology and hydraulics. It is believed that these very same skills were used to transform the marshland between the Capitol Hill and Velia in Rome into an area suitable for settling. The ‘Cloaca Maxima’ – ancient Rome’s remarkable sewage system that still functions today – stands as another testament to the engineering genius of the Etruscans.
