Town (Marble Cutter)

It takes years of apprenticeship to perfect the art of stonemasonry.

Granite, marble and limestone were quarried for construction and decorative art across the classical world. Known for its toughness and durability, granite was perfect for the Pharaohs' burial tombs. As a result the King’s chamber inside the Great Pyramid of Cheops, the one remaining wonder of the ancient world, is still virtually airtight after nearly five thousand years. The Egyptians’ technology for cutting and moving granite was highly advanced. The pyramids’ exteriors were constructed from limestone. However, the Greeks and Romans preferred to use marble for their ornamental structures. Granite was often used for columns, city walls and roads. Limestone, which is easier to carve, was used for the outside of the pyramids and for ornate sarcophagi. It is, however, susceptible to rain corrosion, so many buildings and statues made from limestone have not survived.
