Eastern Small Town (Silk)

A thriving community with trade to attract new settlers.

Small farming settlements were the backbone of ancient civilisations in the east, feeding the great cities such as Antioch and Seleucia. Situated to exploit good land, fishing, mining or quarrying, defence was often too expensive to be more than a secondary consideration. As the populations of the great cities increased, surplus food from these farming communities became essential. As small military garrisons were positioned to protect valuable resources and trade routes, there was a slow growth of many hamlets into towns, as people and trade passed.

(Sogdian Javelinmen)

These men risk their lives by closing with the enemy while carrying only the lightest of equipment. Most armies use poorly equipped levies as skirmishers, very often as javelinmen, since these troops require relatively little training and financial investment, relying mostly on widespread natural skills and scant gear.

Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (AOR_26_Yuezhi_Archers)
Jamsya Yukhuna Duna Purma
(Yuezhi Horse Archers)

These horsemen make up the backbone of the Yuezhi cavalry, as horse-archers. As such, they are armed with extremely powerful composite bows of the asymmetrical, or "Hunnic" style. Their qualities as archers are offset by their performance in melee, as they are lightly armed and wear little to no armour. Used wisely, these mounted archers are a danger to any ill-prepared enemy.

120 Reidonez
Cavalry / Melee Cavalry / (AOR_5_Germanic_Cavalry)
Reidonez
(Germanic Cavalry)

Reidonez ride small and sometimes poor quality horses, though they are excellent light cavalry. They are useful as scouts as well as skirmishers. However, like many Germanic warriors, they can lack battle-discipline and be overeager to enter battle against worthy opponents. This can lead them to be headstrong and difficult to restrain before a fight, as personal glory gained in battle is always welcome. Honour and standing come from fighting, and sometimes the urge for glory overwhelms their good sense!

The Sparabara, meaning "shield bearers" in Persian, are usually the first to engage in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy. These soldiers are armoured in quilted linen and carry large rectangular wicker shields as a form of light manoeuvrable defence.

In battle, slingers are used as light skirmishers, troops with no armour or melee weapons but who rush forward against the enemy to pepper them with stones, only to flee when threatened.

300 Gund-i Nizagan
Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (Eas_Atr_Spear)
Gund-i Nizagan
(Eastern Spearmen)

These poorly trained levy infantry are armed with a spear and a leather-covered wicker shield. Spearmen such as these are trained to form ordered ranks and to march in step. Grouping together bolsters morale and the shieldwall helps to neutralise arrows.
