Levy Camp

Where levied citizens and subjects muster, and train to become soldiers.

Levies could be quickly mustered, outfitted and turned into an army whether citizens or subjects. Usually commanded by nobles or local dignitaries, levies supplemented the elite professional soldiers. Parthian armies, for example, were created by command of the king, who ordered his subordinates to muster troops and gather at an appointed time and place. These noblemen brought their households, attendant warriors, and hamspah - or levies. Over time there was a gradual move away from citizen and subject recruits to professional standing armies and greater use of mercenaries. Both classes were formerly levies who saw warfare as a career rather than a duty. In turn, this opened the way for promotion on merit rather than birth, creating armies loyal to generals rather than the old social order.

(Maure Javelinmen)

Maure infantry are fast moving skirmishing troops used by the Carthaginians and Berber chieftains. They are recruited from the most western provinces of North Africa: lands known for their warriors and their unique fighting style. They are armed with javelins and a sword of North African origin, similar to the Takouba used these days by the Tuareg people. The Maures are protected by a shield made of elephant hide and by a tunic made of animal fur that they use like it was a breastplate.

(Numidian Archers)

Since the earliest times, the Numidian people have fought from a distance. They ruled over the sands and mountains with slings, javelins and simple bows. When the Phoenicians came they pushed many of the nomads further into the harsh interior. The nomads soon adapted to the weapons of these outsiders and became acquainted with the composite bow.

(Numidian Swordsmen)

Numidian infantry may not be as reliable as the heavy infantry of other countries, but they will suffice. These men have some experience in combat, and have been equipped and trained with armaments including large leather Thureos shields, swords and throwing spears. They wear tall conical helms characteristic of Numidia and simple loose tunics which are common across Northwest Africa at this time.
