A warrior cannot ride a sheep into battle!

Horses played an important role in Celtic society, both spiritually and practically. Many Roman writers freely admitted that the Celts were excellent horsemen, and they went as far as calling Celtic mercenaries the best cavalry in the Roman army. The Romans even adopted a Celtic deity in the hope that she would bestow the equine knowledge and skill of the Celts upon Rome. Epona is one of very few deities to be accepted into the Roman pantheon without change, although her role did develop over time. Eventually, she provided protection for all those who worked with horses and not just the animals themselves. She was a popular deity among the Roman cavalry, and her cult spread across Europe wherever the Romans had cavalry garrisons.

They wield iron spears, and use the gladii or falcatas hanging from their waist to deadly effect.

2	100	Cavalry / Melee Cavalry / (Ibe_Lusotannan_Cav) Ambakaro Epones (Lusitani Elite Medium Cavalry) While not numerous in Lusitanian armies, these cavalrymen are fundamentally important as scouts and, most of all, as good skirmishing medium cavalry, using the agility and speed of their horses. They are courageous and very competent, but should avoid spear-armed infantry at all costs. They protect themselves with light armour made of quilted linen under composite leather. They also use their trademark bronze helmets with the "bucula" ("facemask") along with steel falcata swords and caetra shields.

3	120	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Ibe_Lusotannan_light_cav) Epones Aeiste (Lusitani Light Cavalry) The thundering of hooves, a hail of iron-tipped javelins, and they are gone, only to reappear from another quarter. Again and again these cavalrymen harry the enemy until their foes, fearful and demoralised, break formation, whereupon the Epones Aeiste strike home, unsheathing sharp swords and parrying their foes' blows with small round shields; they ride down their enemies without mercy.

4	100	Cavalry / Missile Cavalry / (Ibe_Lusotannan_noble_cav) Nuri Ippaece (Lusitani Noble Cavalry) Their mounts are fast, deep-lunged and untiring. These men, wealthy retainers of their lord, have proven themselves in battle and have been rewarded with lands and silver to buy and tend their mounts, and can afford the protection of scale or chainmail armour, and bronze helmets. The Nuri Ippaece sing songs of victory and the brave deeds of their ancestors, only to suddenly disappear, and reappear as if from nowhere, bearing down on their enemy in a swift, lethal charge until the outsiders are driven screaming from the field of battle.
