Levy Camp

Where levied citizens and subjects muster, and train to become soldiers.

Levies could be quickly mustered, outfitted and turned into an army whether citizens or subjects. Usually commanded by nobles or local dignitaries, levies supplemented the elite professional soldiers. Parthian armies, for example, were created by command of the king, who ordered his subordinates to muster troops and gather at an appointed time and place. These noblemen brought their households, attendant warriors, and hamspah - or levies. Over time there was a gradual move away from citizen and subject recruits to professional standing armies and greater use of mercenaries. Both classes were formerly levies who saw warfare as a career rather than a duty. In turn, this opened the way for promotion on merit rather than birth, creating armies loyal to generals rather than the old social order.

Kofyaren
(Hyrkanian Hillmen)

Verkhana Kofyaren, or Hyrkanian Hillmen, are bands of warriors from the various clans of Hyrkania in northern Persia. These men are adept at guerrilla warfare and can serve as fierce light infantry. They wear simple tunics and are armed with spears, axes and shields. They are fierce warriors and will give a good account of themselves, but more disciplined infantry will get the better of them in combat.

Zubindar-i Payahdag
(Eastern Skirmishers)

These men risk their lives by closing with the enemy while carrying only the lightest of equipment. Most armies use poorly equipped levies as skirmishers, very often as javelinmen, since these troops require relatively little training and financial investment, relying mostly on widespread natural skills and scant gear.

(Parthian Axemen)

Armed with the sagaris, or the Persian pick-axe" (ironically being Scythian in origin) and a bundle of javelins, these axemen are prepared for guerilla tactics. They are called Takâbarâ in Parthian history and will later form the core of the Sassanid heavy infantry."

Parthohellenikoi Thureophoroi
(Partho-Hellenic Infantry)

These thureophoroi are little different from those of Hellenic nations. They are recruited from garrison soldiers of the numerous Parthian cities in western Iran and Mesopotamia, and are often descended from Greeks, or even deported or captured Romans. These medium infantry are armed with a thrusting sword and a thureos shield, and wear relatively light quilted leather or linen armour as well as helmets.
