Blemmyai (Imperator Augustus) Minor Settlement (Leather) Level 1
Eastern Hamlet (Leather)
A small community founded for common goals and in shared beliefs.Small farming settlements were the backbone of ancient civilisations in the east, feeding the great cities such as Antioch and Seleucia. Situated to exploit good land, fishing, mining or quarrying, defence was often too expensive to be more than a secondary consideration. As the populations of the great cities increased, surplus food from these farming communities became essential. As small military garrisons were positioned to protect valuable resources and trade routes, there was a slow growth of many hamlets into towns, as people and trade passed.

Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (Afr_Levy_Spear) Hanatim Kushim (African Levy Spearmen) These men are equipped with spears, shields and helmets of varying quality depending on who levied them. These spearmen can be expected to perform well as light line infantry, but their lack of armor means they will have problems facing more heavily equipped infantry, and might be at a disadvantage against missile troops firing from an angle not covered by their shields. |

Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (AOR_16_Garamantine_Levies) Dorkim Garamantim (Garamantine Levies) Garamantine warriors are masters of hit and run tactics. Launching raids from their oasis strongholds, they attack towns, outposts, watchtowers, and nomadic tribes. They fight first with throwing spears and javelins, but can fight in close combat when necessary with their spears and leather shields. They wear a cow skin cloak for protection from dangers on the battlefield as well as from the environment. |

Missile Infantry / Missile Infantry / (AOR_27_Subeshi_Archers) Paya Hinam Dunai Purma (Subeshi Archers) These archers wear a felt helmet, leather leggings, and a thick sheepskin coat with the wool turned inside-out, and carry a recurved composite bow. The bows they carry are a larger version of the Scythian recurved composite bow, enabling them to outrange, outshoot, and outpower other steppe nomad horse archers, making these foot bowmen the ideal counter to horse archers in a stationary exchange of missiles. |

Melee Infantry / Spear Infantry / (AOR_5_Germanic_Levies) Gaizoz Frije (Germanic Levies) Gaizoz Frije, whose name also means “Free Spears,” are composed largely of local farmers and hunters, Germanic freemen of the lowest rank, accustomed to frequent raids and tribal warfare from a young age. According to Germanic tradition, as soon as these men receive their gaizaz (spear) and skelduz (shield), they are frije (free) adults, charged with equal shares and responsibilities in the tribe. Frije also means one's own, for to belong is to fulfill the duties of being free. |
