Wo eingezogene Bürger und Untertanen gemustert und zu Soldaten ausgebildet werden.

Heerbanne ließen sich schnell aufstellen, ausrüsten und in eine Armee verwandeln, egal, ob die Männer Bürger oder Untertanen waren. Diese Truppen wurden gewöhnlich von Adeligen oder örtlichen Würdenträgern kommandiert und unterstützten Eliteeinheiten und Berufssoldaten. Parthische Armeen etwa wurden auf Geheiß des Königs aufgestellt, der seinen Untergebenen befahl, Truppen zu mustern und zu einer bestimmten Zeit an einem bestimmten Ort zu versammeln. Diese Untergebenen brachten dann ihren Haushalt, anwesende Krieger und eingezogene Heerbanne (Hamspah).

Mit der Zeit wandte man sich in der hellenischen Welt von Bürgern und Untertanen ab und stellte eine dauerhafte Armee auf. Bei diesen Berufssoldaten und Söldnern handelte es sich um dieselben Männer wie zuvor bei den Heerbannen, die nun Pflicht gegen Karriere getauscht hatten. Mit der Zeit wurden Beförderungen nach Leistung vergeben, nicht mehr nach Geburt, und es entstanden Armeen, die Generälen, und nicht der alten sozialen Ordnung, treu waren.

1	300	Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (ind_axemen) Parasudharah (Indian Axemen) These axe-bearers are not guards, but regular soldiers. They wield long two-handed iron axes with wooden or bamboo handles. Since they wear little to no armour and do not carry shields, they are vulnerable to missile fire, but their halberd-like poleaxes can cut through infantry and cavalry alike. Axemen like these can be seen on grave paintings in the Ajanta Caves.

2	200	Geschossinfanterie / Geschossinfanterie / (ind_longbowmen) Capadhara Yoddhr (Indian Longbowmen) These men are armed with the weapon most closely associated with the ancient Indian warrior: the longbow. These archers can use their bows with great efficiency, and though they may not have the best aim, the power and range of their weapons more than makes up for this, and their broadswords make them more capable in melee than most archers.

3	200	Geschossinfanterie / Geschossinfanterie / (ind_southern_mercs) Dravida Bharya (Dravidian Mercenaries) The word Dravidian comes from the Sanskrit term dravida, which means southern. These Dravidian tribal warriors wear simple loincloths, or even skirts made out of plants, and are armed with simple spears and bows. While not directly subjects of the emperor, a substantial part of Mauryan armies consists of auxiliary troops levied from allied kingdoms and subservient tribes, used to bolster the size of the army.

4	300	Nahkampfinfanterie / Nahkampfinfanterie / (ind_swordsmen) Ksatriya Khadgacarmadharas (Indian Swordsmen) Armed with big chopping swords and tall shields, these swordsmen are the shock infantry of Indian armies. The kukri swords they wield have a curved shape, resembling the Greek kopis, but are bigger. They are likely the product of Hellenic influences on Indian armament, where the Indians have adapted the shape to fit other purposes as well.

5	300	Nahkampfinfanterie / Speerinfanterie / (ind_veteran_spearmen) Sathriya Leetipadai (Pandyan Spearmen) These battle-hardened veteran spearmen are recruited from more elder Kshatriyas. They are useful as flank-guards, advance guards for the archers, and reserves behind the swordsmen, in case any foe, especially horsemen, should get the better of them.
