Römisches Dorf (Seide)
Unter all seiner Herrlichkeit besteht das römische Reich aus Dörfern und nicht aus großen Städten.Wohin sich die Römer auch begaben, sie eroberten nicht nur, sie ließen sich auch nieder und errichteten Gemeinden. Aus Steinen und Ziegeln errichteten die Römer Kolonien, die lange erhalten bleiben sollten. Koloniestädte entwickelten sich aus kleinen Weilern und Dörfern, die schon bestanden. Sie wurden zu Zentren der regionalen Verwaltung und des regionalen Handels. Diese Provinzstädte, oder „civitates“, wurden im Schachbrettmuster gebaut und zum Schutz mit Steinmauern eingefasst. Kleinere „vici“ waren weniger formal und entstanden oft abseits von römischen Militärlagern, um die Soldaten mit den Annehmlichkeiten und Vergnügungen der Heimat zu versorgen.
