Sorgfältige Planung sät den Samen der Großartigkeit.Die Anordnung antiker hellenistischer Siedlungen ist das Ergebnis jahrhundertelanger zufälliger Entwicklungen. Durch die wechselnden Bedürfnisse der Einwohner wurden Städte zerstört, auf- und umgebaut, ohne dass man sich Gedanken über Organisation machte.
Die Grundrisse der Städte waren oft verwirrend und im Versuch, dies zu korrigieren, legte man neue Siedlungen nach einem Gittermuster an. Hierbei führten breite, rechtwinklige Straßen zur Agora, dem Zentrum des öffentlichen Lebens in der griechischen Welt. Hippodamos von Milet, dem diese Idee zugeschrieben wird, argumentierte, dass die Vorteile hiervon weit mehr als nur praktisch waren und es zu einer geordneteren und ausgeglicheneren Gesellschaft führen würde.
