Auxiliarlager
Jede Armee muss zuerst zusammengerufen und organisiert werden, bevor sie ausgesandt werden kann.Rom erwartete von seinem Volk, dass es für die Stadt und das Land kämpfte, wenn es nötig war. Die Armee war ursprünglich eine Bürgermiliz, in der die meisten Männer selbst für ihre Waffen und Ausrüstung sorgten. Mit der Machtsteigerung Roms wurde es notwendig, die Truppenanzahl zu steigern und Auxiliareinheiten aus Nicht-Römern wurden rekrutiert. Die Einberufung von Auxiliareinheiten begann unter dem ersten Kaiser Augustus und stützte sich auf Nicht-Bürger aus dem Land, Verbündete und eroberte Nationen. Der Dienst dauerte 25 Jahre. Danach erhielt ein Auxiliar und seine Erben die römische Staatsbürgerschaft, einen wichtigen und überlegenen Status.
In der römischen Armee fanden sich so viele Kulturen und Nationalitäten wieder, die ihre eigenen Sprachen sprachen und auf traditionelle Weise kämpften. Im 2. Jahrhundert v. Chr. bestand etwa die Hälfte der gesamten Armee und beinah die gesamte Kavallerie aus Auxiliaren.
