The center of Carthaginian power.

Každý stát kolem Středozemního moře potřeboval loďstvo, aby bránilo životně důležité obchodní cesty. Nejodvážnějšími starověkými mořeplavci byli Kartáginci, kteří si na pozemní boje najímali žoldnéře a sami se soustředili na budování obrovské flotily a ještě větších lodí. Jak obchody postupně vzkvétaly, rostla potřeba přepravy větších nákladů a jednotek, a tím i důležitost ovládnutí moří. Proto Kartáginci stavěli obrovské válečné koráby, jež poháněli veslaři z řad měšťanů. Kromě trirém v řeckém stylu stavěli i quinquerémy a dokonce i septirémy, které byly vyztuženy tak, aby v případě potřeby mohly prorážet trupy nepřátelských plavidel. Největší starověká loď byla Syracusia, kterou projektoval Archimédes a zbudovat ji nechal v roce 240 př. n. l. král Hierón II. K její stavbě bylo třeba 60krát více surovin nežli na průměrnou trirému a stavělo ji 300 zdatných dělníků po dobu delší než rok.
