Syracuse (Occupied)

Pěší střelci / Střelecká pěchota / (AOR_10_Crossbows) Gastraphetes (Crossbow Infantry) This unit is the forerunner of medieval arbalesters. The gastraphetes crossbow, however, is more a handheld siege weapon than a battlefield weapon. The army of Syracuse was one of the first to use this weapon, with one unit of psiloi under the tyrant Dionisyus I. Later, this weapon would find its way into the Macedonian army of Alexander, used during several sieges by specially trained soldiers to kill city defenders. |

Pěší střelci / Střelecká pěchota / (AOR_10_Dart_Slingers) Kestrosphendones (Dart Slingers) The kestros is a dart thrown by a specially made sling, or propelled by a staff on a sling. It takes a long time to reload, but allows for more deadly and accurate shots than any other weapon of the time if correctly used, thanks to the shape of the darts, which can fly straight and precise trajectories. This weapon is mentioned in a Polybian account about new weapons in the army of Perseus, shortly before the last open confrontation between the Macedonians and the Roman Republic (169-168 BCE)."""" |

Pěchota pro boj zblízka / Kontaktní pěchota / (AOR_10_Sicily_Bruttian_Infantry) Pezoi Brettioi (Bruttian Infantry) The Bruttii come from the southern extremity of Italy. These Bruttian troops are dependable medium infantry. They carry two pila, which they throw before engaging in close combat with their swords. They are well armoured with a variety of bronze pectorales, typical of the Oscan warrior class. Their helmets show Greek and Italian influence, known as Italo-Attic. They fought for Pyrrhus during his invasion of Italy. |

Pěchota pro boj zblízka / Pěchota s kopími / (Cel_Batacorii) Batacorii (Belgae Spear Warriors) Batacorii are the rank-and-file warriors of the Belgae, a group of extremely fierce, highly independent Gallo-Germanic tribes living in northern Gaul, who are well trained and experienced in war. Shunning the 'comforts' often afforded the members of the 'civilized' states, they pride themselves on their rugged way of life, their toughness of mind and body, and their skill at arms. |

Pěchota pro boj zblízka / Pěchota s kopími / (Cel_Gaizoz_Alje) Gaizoz Alje (Foreign Spears) On the borders between the Celtic and Germanic territories where the cultures of these peoples have become entwined, a fusion of Gallo-Germanic fighting styles has occurred. The Gaizoz Alje (Foreign Spears") are capable warriors who fight with longshields, javelins, and Celtic longspears - the latter being an excellent weapon for dismounting enemy riders. They throw javelins before charging, and can use their spears to absorb the shock of a cavalry rush. Their battle skills are a mix of Celtic and Germanic styles, and they are useful addition to any army." |

Pěchota pro boj zblízka / Kontaktní pěchota / (Cel_Karotovas) Karotovas (Fighting Men) The Karotovas are wealthy tribal warriors heralding from the regions around the southern Baltic Sea. The possession of armour or iron weapons is unusual among the tribes who inhabit this area, and in this regard the Karotovas are unique. They carry well-made unique slashing swords, and can hit with a powerful - albeit disorderly - charge. As they are somewhat undisciplined, they often disregard notions of prudence and can charge at their own will. |

Pěchota pro boj zblízka / Pěchota s kopími / (Cel_Lugoae) Lugoae (Levy Troops) During periods of strife and war, it is sometimes necessary to call upon ordinary citizens to organize as a militia. Militia in Celtic societies - known as the Lugoae - are farmers, craftsmen, and fishermen who are called to brief military service in periods of crisis. They may train a few times a year to fight and participate in games and sports to improve their physicality, but they're still only militia, and can only be trusted to do so much. |

They are primarily mountaineers living on both sides of the Carpathians, which bear their name. |

They have settled in the delta of the Istros (Danube), on an island called Peuce facing the Pontus Euxinus, hence their name. |

Among the elites, they have famous spearmen, the Speutagardaz. They are skilled enough to form impressive shieldwalls with five meter long spears, a rather unusual feature. Speutagardaz use long spears with a short and narrow head. They are well equipped, probably having light axes, reinforced leather armor, and a leather and scale helmet, which is lighter and cheaper than the usual iron helmet, but highly protective. |
