在公元前315年的第二次萨莫奈战争之前，罗马人还使用方阵战术。罗马人在地形问题上吃够了苦头之后，借鉴了萨莫奈人的战术，衍生出更具机动性的小队系统。三小队取代了原来的大方阵：青年兵在阵前，经验丰富的中年兵站主阵线，最后是老兵守阵尾。

该战术系统在罗马军中百试不爽，直到新敌人的出现与新经济基础的发展才使其弱化。执政官盖乌斯·马略在改革整个罗马军队之后情况发生了戏剧性的变化，他创造了罗马最基本的部队，也就是现在所谓的“传统”罗马军团。他的军事体系经证明非常有效，后世数位领袖都采用这种体系。这便是意欲征服已知世界的马略大军…
