King's Fianna

Even powerful men do great deeds to please their king.

In Celtic Ireland, ‘fianna’ were independent bands of men and women, often aristocratic but yet to inherit, who proved their mettle in service of a local lord. As such, they were supplied with food and shelter during the winter months in return for keeping the peace. In the summer, the members of the fianna – known as ‘fian’ – had to hunt for their own food, making additional income from selling the pelts of animals they had eaten. Fianna and their exploits are featured heavily in Irish folklore, particularly the Ulster Cycle - in which a band of twenty-seven fian are led by the druid Cathbad - and the Fenian Cycle – in which the mythical warrior Fionn mac Cumhaill leads them to victory against the enemies of the High King.
