Trade Hubs

Much like the Sassanids before them, the caliphates realised that trade along the silk road from China was of paramount importance, as was the establishment of a trade monopoly to the west. This was considered vital, as goods from the east constituted a colossal proportion of their economy. The size of the Islamic empire, furthermore, allowed numerous opportunities for commerce, as their borders spanned the length of the known world. In Al-Andalus, natural resources of silver, combined with new developments in agriculture, made the Iberian Peninsula a very attractive trade 'partner' indeed.
