Military Remuneration

A field to fight, another to live.

Islamic armies were clearly organised during the reigns of the Rashidan caliphs, who took steps to establish them as official departments of the state. As such, a census of those available for drafting was taken in order to fix soldiers' salaries. Conscription was initiated, as all men were liable to be called up. Some were simply drafted, whilst others were told they were, essentially, 'on-call'. Unlike the Roman system of remuneration, Muslim armies were mostly paid in cash, though some land packages were also distributed. In doing so, they formed the basis upon which contemporary military systems still work, with armies very much dependant on the state to survive.
