The military of the Sassanid Empire, much like its emergent culture, was a complex, fluid, hybrid institution. At first, the ancestral noble families of Parthian descent ruled their provinces with relative impunity under the Shahanshah, and as such when called to war they continued to fight in an almost feudal Parthian style. As time passed, however, the army became more adept as they attempted to simulate Roman military ideals they faced. Also inspired by their own Persian ancestry, the horde mentality of Parthian steppe militarism evolved into a style of more adept, professional horsemen, informed by gradual socio-economic change across the empire.
