Control of Institutions

"The Shahanshah does not believe in privatisation."

Zoroastrianism was the primary religion of the Sassanids. It did not become the official religion of the empire until much later, but the Shahanshahs had an interesting and continued relationship with the faith from the inception of the empire under Ardashir I. The sanction, by the Zoroastrian church, helped to legitimise the administration and empower the new king. A legitimate, religiously-approved king would be better liked by his pious subjects, and allow him to become a patron for the religion, benefiting both institutions. Although Ardashir identified as broadly Zoroastrian, Shapur I was determined to officialise the religion; he founded many fire temples across Persian territory and vested his own man, Kirder, with the power to implement sweeping religious changes. Shapur, in this way, laid the groundwork for later Shahs to take control of, and institutionalise, the Zoroastrian faith - as Yazdegerd II eventually achieved.
