Local Traditions

The past is alive; it will never die.

In order to cement and legitimise their rule, the western barbarians sought to go further than merely adding a layer of their most prestigious people on top of existing Roman society. The Ostrogothic king, Theoderic the Great, for instance, immediately forged alliances through the marriage of his most loyal free men to the daughters of Roman nobles and those of his barbarian rivals amongst the Vandals, etc. in order that society might quickly return to a sense of normality and community, and life might go on relatively unhindered. There was an ulterior motive, however, in that Theoderic wished barbarian Europe to stand behind him against the Eastern Roman Empire and any attempts they may make to recapture the territory lost following the West's collapse. Unfortunately, his marriage-alliance policy was only partially successful; the Visigoths were soon at war with the Franks and Theoderic's alliance with the Vandals floundered after the death of Thrasamund, a fellow Arian Christian and enemy of Constantinople.
