Advanced Archery Training

"Our arrows will blot out the sun."

Archers were as important as cavalry in eastern warfare. Foot archers, in contrast to the majority of Sassanid infantry, were famed for their skill and importance in battle. Archery training was emphasised as a strong body of archers was seen as key to victory. They were expected to fire as fast and as accurately as possible, creating a screen of missiles that softened the enemy up for the Savaran charge. Some corps even alternated fire between companies of men, so that it was always maintained - a practice adopted centuries later by riflemen as 'fire by rank'.
