New Aristocracy

"...and in so far as we follow you do we excel all other nations."

As many former ‘barbarian’ peoples had been brought under Rome’s yolk during the Republican and early Imperial years, Germanic soldiers had served directly in the Roman army for several centuries. Over time, many rose to be Senators and high-ranking administrators such as Magister Militum – a position which was held by several men of barbarian descent over the years. By the 4th and 5th centuries AD, the only way of distinguishing between these ‘Romanitas’ and those of ‘true blood’ was their names, indicating that they had become fully integrated into Roman society in almost every way. The net result of this was the ‘Romanisation’ of many Germanic leaders, which in turn led to a great degree of Romanisation of the barbarian kingdoms that succeeded the collapsed Western Empire from AD476. In order to cement and legitimise their rule, the barbarian successor kings sought to go further than merely adding a layer of their most prestigious people on top of existing Roman society. The Ostrogothic king, Theoderic the Great, for instance, immediately forged alliances through the marriage of his most loyal free men to the daughters of Roman nobles and those of his barbarian rivals amongst the Vandals, etc. in order that society might quickly return to a sense of normality and community, and life might go on relatively unhindered. There was an ulterior motive, however, in that Theoderic wished barbarian Europe to stand behind him against the Eastern Roman Empire and any attempts to recapture the territory lost following the West's collapse. Unfortunately, his marriage-alliance policy was only partially successful; the Visigoths were soon at war with the Franks and Theoderic's alliance with the Vandals floundered after the death of Thrasamund, a fellow Arian Christian and enemy of Constantinople.
