Divine Sanction
"In the sight of man and Zoroaster, I proclaim you King of Kings!"The creation of an official state religion allowed the rulers of the eastern kingdoms to rapidly establish control, officially blurring the lines between church and state and increasing the power and control of both institutions at the same time. For example, in Sassanid Persia the Avesta, the primary set of Zoroastrian religious texts, were revived as the faith experienced a surge in the ideological power it wielded. In this way, the priesthood grew to wield influence over military and judicial matters as well. By the same token, the king was able to do whatever he wanted as long as he had “divine sanction” – the official approval of Ahura Mazda through his priesthood.
