持盾兵的名稱來源於拉丁語中的盾牌一詞，儘管伊比利亞人不可能將該頭銜用在自己身上。持盾兵手持一塊大橢圓型的木質盾牌，非常適合一對一作戰。他們身穿小型盔甲，跟大多數的敵人相比，特別是重裝羅馬軍團相比機動性就要強得多。這種機動性被用於發起衝鋒然後假裝撤退，以吸引敵軍來追逐，從而打破他們的隊形。一旦敵軍單位上當受騙，就停止撤退，將馬上發起真正的攻擊，斷絕敵軍後援：可能這是個簡單的戰術，但是如果良好運用的話還是會對敵軍造成致命打擊。
