The Royal Family Houses of the great nomadic, steppe tribes relied on a cadre of grizzled, experienced veterans to guard their palatial tents, pavilions, yurts, and aul villages of the ruling family. Additionally, able and bold tribe chieftains utilized these shock forces to drive a decisive wedge in the battle, surprising the enemy with a decent, albeit not exemplary, but still formidable infantry force, as the rest of the nomad mounted forces pepper away with arrow fire and whittle down with lancer charges. The utilization of these crack soldiers at the most opportune moment in the battle may spell between a surefire victory or a prolonged battle. Most steppe, nomadic tribes avoid prolonged battles and if it has come to that, then these royal guard soldiers are the last and final defense and reserves.
