部落居民

聰明人在與自己人爭執前會先與沙漠作鬥爭。

阿拉伯半島不是一個國家,而是被相互聯系的部落和強大的家族佔領的一塊兒土地。遊牧的貝多因人放養羊群,在沙漠中做貿易,而農民在綠洲周圍定居。駱駝幫助遊牧部落增強力量。不同的部落有很多不同的作戰方式,但是步兵在阿拉伯軍隊裡一直很重要。不穿盔甲的投石者速度很快,作為散兵,他們有效地擾亂敵人。阿拉伯也以他們的近戰攻擊技能為榮。傳統上,他們突襲是為了戰利品而不是為了征服。突襲或者掠奪給凱旋的士兵帶來榮耀,也為部落帶來了牲畜和商品。衝突的規模一般很小,因為在戰鬥中面對數目懸殊的敵人時撤退並不可恥,大大避免了傷亡。征服埃及之後,羅馬不得不穿過阿拉伯半島,確保和印度進行有利可圖的貿易,但是羅馬人從來沒有完全征服沙漠以及沙漠民族。
