羅馬軍隊的輕步兵征募自羅馬的貧困階級或者因太年輕而無法在軍隊中作為青年兵戰鬥的人。他們身著狼皮頭飾,據認為它們有圖騰意義,不過他們也能驚嚇敵人。在扎馬之戰(公元前202年),當西庇阿·阿夫里卡努斯對陣迦太基將軍漢尼拔之時,正是輕步兵幫助阻止了開始的大象衝鋒。他們反復攻擊大象使其狂暴,而騎兵吹響號角使其迷失方向。漢尼拔本希望利用他的衝鋒打破羅馬的陣線;但是很多受驚嚇的大象反而向他的迦太基人襲來。未撞向迦太基人的大象小心地進入了羅馬陣線中的空隙。
